Us is a series of family portraits: my two children, my husband and one self-portrait. These pictures are a record of particular personal relationships.
As a woman, the traditional keeper of family history, I made these pictures in black and white to defamiliarise the now ubiquitous colour snap family picture form. The use of black and white also heightens the formal aspects of the pictures, particularly the use of shadows here, and the way the shapes work within the frame.
This folio of 15 pictures was originally part of a larger work entitled ‘A Document 1985-1987’.
The portfolio ‘Us’ is in The Michael G. Wilson Collection, London and Los Angeles, and some of the pictures also belong to the Collection at Musee des Beaux Arts, Calais, France.
