My personal work has inspired many commissions in the advertising industry. These commissions have always been inspired directly through my project pictures being shown to art directors. These were mostly household names and I found that I enjoyed being a team leader and photography project manager. I like working with the creative teams in advertising agencies, who sometimes arrived at their jobs through studying of Fine Art.

DfEE - Get into Teaching for Department for Education, UK Government

I was commissioned to make a large series of pictures for the UK Government DFE National College for Teaching and Leadership to recruit more teachers in the UK from home and abroad.

Over the years I was asked by the DFE to do the same brief several times, but it slowly evolved from setting everything up in 2004 and shooting model children on film in the school holidays, to being completely real and making the documentary pictures digitally, recently.

In the last two campaigns all the students and the teachers were real at real schools, in real situations. It is currently in use (2019/2020) as press, posters and social media.

Marie Claire, Netherlands KesselsKramer

These three pictures are from a series I was asked to make picturing women at home, naked. Erik Kessel’s brief to me was that in the evening, relaxed and after a busy day when make up and clothes are removed some women wander about as their real, unenhanced selves.

Originally commissioned by KesselsKramer, Amsterdam, to promote a popular women’s magazine , Marie Claire, in the Netherlands, the campaign was pulled due to the sensitivity of the subject matter, nudity.

Responsible Farming for Co-Operative Group UK

This shows a small part of a campaign, in 1998, notable because it was one of the first to try to reflect authenticity, sustainability and corporate social responsibility for a UK supermarket.

I was asked to travel to Kenya with my team to photograph the workers on an equatorial plantation that supplied tea to the Co-Op. It highlighted the good and fair conditions for the workers and the provenance of the product.

Local Childcare for Department for Education, UK

My first commission from DfE involved making pictures to promote local childcare incentives. The little girl in the high heels was inspired by my work, Woman to Woman.

Associated Train Operating Companies

This is part of a campaign run to promote Railcards in the UK which offer discount rail journeys. The brief, to picture hugs at rail stations when people arrive to see their friends and loved ones, was a given. I cast all the models and chose the locations in my quest for real situations. The logos and colours obviously added later are shown here to indicate how they affected the final pictures.
